DBSP Launches Into Africa

DBSP was originally written for and developed around the South African context. Up until 3 years ago there were no plans to run DBSP interventions anywhere else but in South Africa. Then in 2006, Chris Black was invited to go up to Kenya and to meet with a group of people interested in what the DBSP was doing in South Africa. Here he met, amongst others, Wendy Ludovici and Peter Twycross. These two have been involved in Church Planting over the past few years in Kenya, and were looking at different, new and innovative ways of empowering impoverished communities and people in Kenya. After our initial round of meetings it was decided that Chris would come to Kenya in March of 2007 and run a pilot DBSP programme in Nairobi.

After Wendy & Peter had raised some funds and Chris had properly contextualised the programme and its materials, Chris ran a Micro Business Start-Up Programme (MBS Programme) for 20 participants in Nairobi, during March. The training went off well, and Chris, Wendy and Peter sat down to discuss ways of carrying on with DBSP training in Kenya.

One of the things that became clear during the discussions, was that Chris did not want DBSP South Africa to run operations in Kenya, so we set about talking through and developing a semi-franchise model for DBSP, so that the DBSP could be replicated in and 'exported' to other Countries in the future. After a lot of discussion and both formal and informal chats, some parameters for a working agreement were developed. These soon took shape and formed the basis for starting up DBSP in other Countries. For the 'nuts and bolts' of this working agreement, see the page "DBSP in other African Countries", or Click here

To date, most of the working agreement points have been put into place and are running well in Kenya. So far, we have trained up 10 Kenyan Trainer / Facilitators, set up the administration part, formed relationships with other stakeholders and run 8 programmes and, thanks largely to Wendy, set up avenues of ongoing funding to support the running of more and more programmes in Kenya. Currently DBSP Kenya is running programmes in greater Nairobi and in Eldoret in Western Kenya. Plans are already in place to start running programmes in other places around Kenya.

Below is a pictorial overview of the work done thus far in Kenya.

Congratulations to Vuyiswa Nyaniso, our representative in Carletonville, on her recent marriage.
At last, Vuyiswa has tied the knot. It was a fantastic day of celebration and joy. The ceremony was very moving and the reception was a lavish affair and extremely well organised. All the guests had a really good time as they celebrated this very special occasion. DBSP is so proud of Vuyiswa and wishes her and her new husband all the very best and God's richest blessings for the years to come.

Here are some pictures of the special occasion, enjoy ...

Congratulations also need to be extended to Irvin Molelekoa on his marriage. Irvin, who is the DBSP's Trainer/Facilitator for the Klerksdorp region, got married on Saturday the 26th of October, 2008. It was a great and very festive occasion and enjoyed by everyone. After a few small problems - the main one being the sound system which broke down just minutes before the service was to start - the proceedings got underway. After a short, but very effective service, the reception party began. This was very lively, with a lot of song items being rendered by 2 different singing groups. The meal was fantastic and was served up to the 100 or so guests that attended the wedding. The day was a very special and memorable one - made especially so by the size of the wedding cake - check it out below!!. DBSP wishes Irvin and his new bride all the very best and God's richest blessings on their marriage and family life together.

Here are some pictures taken at the wedding for you to enjoy..
